In today’s digital era there are many problems within society which stem from social media platforms which directly target younger generations and have become an integral part of many lives.  Today’s society places a huge emphasis on the appearance part of body image, rather than the health aspect of it and social media is one of the biggest reasons why. People should be mainly concerned about their health and taking good physical care of themselves, rather than just how they look. For most teenagers, body image is how they see themselves compared to the idealized body type that is considered most desirable. More so than ever, young women are getting plastic surgery and fillers and developing unhealthy eating habits in an attempt to stay as small and skinny as possible. Since mostly all teenagers have access to social media, these young individuals are constantly seeing models and influencers who more often than not edit their photos as well as have a team of people getting them to look the way that they do. This sets the unrealistic idea that everyone needs to look that way in order to be considered pretty or of any value. Another huge problem is that these influencers with massive platforms are paid by companies to promote unhealthy habits that are specifically targeted at the youth. Diet hacks and easy workout routines are constantly advertised on all social media platforms, encouraging young women to buy their products thinking that they will immediately look and feel better, just like the influencer who is promoting the product. A primary example of this is in 2018 when Kim Kardashian posted an ad on Instagram for appetite-suppressant lollipops from FlatTummyCo. This created a huge outrage online as, Kim Kardashian is one of the biggest influencers of our time and since many young women look up to her, they will be easily influenced by what she promotes. This lollipop that she chose to advertise was obviously promoting unhealthy eating habits and essentially telling her followers that this is what she used to look the way she does, therefore they should use it too. Young women who are developing, should not have the idea put into their heads, that they should replace meals with just one lollipop, instead of feeding their bodies healthy foods.
